NLDS at Stake

Over the weekend, the Brewers handily won their first two playoff games since 2008. But those were in Milwaukee, where they had baseball’s best home record.

Tonight, they play game 3 in Arizona. And the Diamondbacks are worthy opponents, who have their own home field advantage.

If the Brewers win, they advance to the NLCS. The winner of the best-of-7 National League Championship series advances to the World Series. That means the Brewers are 5 wins away from playing for all the marbles.

Can they do it? We’ll find out. We’ll get some indication in as soon as an hour from this posting. Here’s hoping.

Brewers Win NL Central

The magic number is 0. They did it.

Ryan Braun’s 3-run homer sealed the Marlin’s fate, bring it down to 1. When the Cubs beat the Cardinals 25 minutes later, the Brewers officially became the 2011 NL Central champs.

Mets 8, Cardinals 6

The Brewers enjoyed a day off yesterday, but their magic number still went down, courtesy of the Mets. It is now 2.

Tonight, the Brewers start a 3-game series against the Marlins, and the Cardinals take on the Cubs. If the Brewers win and the Cardinals lose, the division is clinched.

Brewers 5, Cubs 1

The magic number is now 3. If the Cardinals cooperate — they didn’t last night, downing the Mets 11-6 — the Brewers could officially win the NL Central as soon as tomorrow.

Since St. Louis is on a hot streak and Milwaukee is on a tepid streak, it could be a bit longer than that. There are 7 games left in the regular season.

Cardinals 2, Brewers 0

This was a tense one. Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter apparently said something he shouldn’t have after striking out Nyjer Morgan in a 10-pitch at-bat in the ninth inning. Morgan’s teammates had to physically restrain him. Luckily they avoided a brawl; that would be a bad way to end the season series.

Now it’s back home to face a tough Phillies team. The magic number remains 11.

Cardinals 4, Brewers 2

The magic number stays at 11. They’ll have another go at it tonight.

Tomorrow, the Brewers begin a 4-game set against the Phillies. I’m curious to see how they fare against a team with a 50 percent larger payroll — and a possible playoff opponent.

Brewers 4, Cardinals 1

This Brewers-Cardinals series started off better than the last one. Randy Wolf pitched a gem, and the offense was able put up enough runs to keep the lead comfortable.

The magic number is now 11, with 20 games left.

Brewers 4, Astros 0

The Brewers rebounded from being swept by St. Louis by sweeping Houston.

St. Louis lost to Cincinnati.

Milwaukee and St. Louis begin another three-game set today.

The Brewers’ magic number is 13.

Brewers 8, Astros 2

Same score as the day before, but this time the Brewers never trailed. George Kottaras also hit for the cycle — a rare feat for a backup catcher. He is the first major league player to do it in over a year.

St. Louis won its game against Cincinnati, 6-4.

Milwaukee’s magic number is down to 15.

Brewers 8, Astros 2

The Brewers were down early, but an outburst of 8 unanswered runs sealed the win.

St. Louis also scored 8 runs. Cincinnati, however, scored 11.

Milwaukee’s magic number goes down two. It is now 16.
